Message from the Superintendent of Schools
The Tipton Community School District serves approximately 900 PK-12 students. The district staff is committed to creating a personalized learning experience that recognizes and celebrates individual differences and abilities. The district's aim is to provide a rigorous academic experience that fosters creativity and curiosity while also ensuring that students social and emotional needs are met. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve the Tipton Community in developing tomorrow's leaders.

Weather, Delays, and Closings
The National Weather Service has adjusted their naming of weather warnings and events pertaining to cold weather. Wind chill watches, warnings and advisories have been eliminated. Instead, they have been consolidated into extreme cold watches, extreme cold warnings and cold weather advisories. Please see the graphic to understand what each name means.
For safety of students in winter weather we also may need to run hard surface only bus routes. You can find that information here.
If the National Weather Service issues a COLD WEATHER ADVISORY or EXTREME COLD WATCH that would be in effect at the start of the school day, there may be a 2-hour late start. The time the advisory is issued may affect the decision to delay school. The closer the advisory is made to the start of the school day’s operations, the district will consider other factors in making the decision. The start of the operational school day is 6 a.m.
If the National Weather Service issues an EXTREME COLD WARNING in effect at the start of the operational school day, there may be a 2-hour late start. However, if the extreme cold warning will not be lifted by 10:30 a.m. there will be no school that day. The time the warning is issued may affect the decision to delay school. The closer the warning is made to the start of the operational school day, the district will consider other factors in making the decision. The start of the operational school day is 6 a.m.
The district will make the official announcement of a school delay or closing through the automated calling system, social media, and other media sources. The protocol for cold weather advisory and extreme cold warning is intended to provide a guideline but it does not replace the responsibility of the district to make the best decision for the majority of students and families.
Please note School Breakfast service will not be available when school start time is delayed.
Homeless Children/Youth
Homelessness exists in our community. Many young people leave their homes due to economic conditions, loss of property, abuse, neglect, family conflict, etc.
This school district will ensure that all children and youth receive a free appropriate public education and are given meaningful opportunities to succeed in our schools. This district will also follow the requirements of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act. Homeless students are referred to as children and youth in transition.
Under federal law, children and youth in transition must have access to appropriate public education, including preschool, and be given a full opportunity to meet state and local academic achievement standards. They must be included in state- and district-wide assessments, and accountability systems. Our schools will ensure that children and youth in transition are free from discrimination, segregation, and harassment.
Information regarding this policy will be posted in every school in the district.

Education Programs
Open Enrollment
Tipton Community School District participates as an open enrollment receiving district and sending district. The deadline to submit open enrollment forms is March 1 of the year preceding the school year for which the change is requested.
The deadline for kindergarten students is September 1 of the school year of enrollment into kindergarten.
Open enrollment forms must be submitted to both the sending and receiving district before the deadlines.

Extended Learning Program/TAG
Tipton Community School District's goal is to provide the best, individualized education opportunity for students that have shown exceptional levels of creativity, cognitive abilities, and critical thinking skills while building communication and collaboration skills.
The quality of your child's education is the greatest investment in their future. To best meet the needs of your student, we will use a combination of in-class instruction, in-class enrichment, and out-of-class enrichment.

Special Education
Special education is a broad term that describes the education of students who have intellectual, physical, behavioral, or emotional disabilities. Special education involves specially designed instruction tailored to the unique needs of each child and is provided at no cost to parents. The federal law Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) ensures services to children with disabilities throughout the nation.

Home Schooling/CPI
Families may choose to educate their children at home instead of sending them to a traditional public or nonpublic school. This is called home schooling. Families choose to home school for a variety of reasons. That is why the state of Iowa allows several educational options for home schooling.
